GATE Test Preparation Guide
What is the GATE Exam?
The GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) test, also known as the Academic Selection Entrance Test (ASET), is an assessment designed to evaluate students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, and mathematical abilities. It is not based on rote learning but on applying knowledge to problem-solving.
Exam Structure & Format
The exam consists of four main sections:
1. Reading Comprehension
Students must read various texts like articles, narratives, poetry, and cartoons and answer 35 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes.
2. Communicating Ideas in Writing
A single writing prompt where students must construct a well-structured response within 25 minutes.
3. Quantitative Reasoning
Includes 35 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes. This section tests problem-solving using mathematical concepts.
4. Abstract Reasoning
This section evaluates logical thinking and pattern recognition through 35 multiple-choice questions in 20 minutes.
Eligibility & Application Process
Applications open in October and close in February of the following year. The test usually takes place in March. Students applying for selective schools in WA must take this exam.
Testing Requirements for Applicants
- Academic Applicants: Must complete the ASET.
- Arts Applicants: Must complete the ASET, attend an audition/workshop, and may require an interview.
- Language Applicants: Must complete the ASET and may be required to attend an interview.
Scoring System
The test has a total of 400 marks, with a minimum eligibility score of 210. Only 14% of the 1,548 students who sit for the exam are admitted to Perth Modern School, the only fully selective academic school in WA.
How to Prepare for the GATE Exam
- Practice critical thinking and problem-solving exercises.
- Develop reading comprehension skills by analyzing different types of texts.
- Work on mathematical reasoning and logical problem-solving.
- Practice writing structured responses under time constraints.
The GATE exam is used by Australian schools to identify students for gifted and talented programs, offering enriched learning experiences beyond the standard curriculum for those seeking more challenges.Your child will sit the exam when they're in Grade 6 for Year 7 entry.
The Academic Selection Entrance Test has 4 parts. The multiple choice parts are heavily based around critical thinking, problem-solving and mathematical application and therefore, rote learning such as memorizing multiplication tables or formulas, isn’t going to give your child the edge they need.
